Tips for Starting a Blog about Your Degree or any other topic!

If you have enrolled in a master of science in computer information systems at say, Boston University, you may want to make it even more memorable by starting your own blog about your experience.

Your blog may help others who are enrolled in the same program, either at your university or another, and also act as a great creative outlet for you.

Blogging is great for everyone

Or if you're a mom letting other women know they're not alone can really help them. And they in turn can help you by leaving a comment, telling you they love your posts. You could write about your experience of being knee deep in diapers, and suffering from dreadful lack of sleep.

Or you could write about running, shopping, light bulbs, the moon, the stars, grocery shopping etc. The sky is the limit!

So now that you’ve got this brilliant idea to start a blog, the question is how do you actually go about creating it? 

Here’s the good news, starting a blog is actually fairly simple and with these tips you’ll increase your odds of it being successful.

Create an Image 

Before you even start writing you need to create an image, a brand if you will. What do you want to represent and what tone you will take? Do you plan to use humor and keep things light, or do you want to take a more serious tone? Drawing up an outline with thoughts and ideas can be helpful during this process.
You will want to look for something that makes you and your brand unique. Something that sets you apart from other bloggers and will have people coming back to read what you have to say.

Who is Your Target Audience? 

This goes hand-in-hand with the above tip, as you need to figure out who your target audience is. If it is CIS online students just like you, then think about what you would want to read. What would be relevant, helpful, and entertaining to you? Also: how would you like to get this information? Perhaps through funny posts, videos, podcasts, etc.

Take an Honest Approach 

Now that you are ready to start writing it’s important your words come across honest and authentic. If it’s something you don’t know much about but you want to cover it, look for a guest blogger or expert you can talk to. Your readers need to have trust in you and what you have to say. If it’s not authentic, you’ll find you won’t be successful.

Always Include Images
Images can literally make or break a blog. 

A blog that is text heavy with no visuals is going to be passed right over. Whenever possible add images; that can mean photos you’ve taken, free stock photos from online sources, cartoons, or anything that adds visual interest to the page. Embedded video and audio can also be extremely effective.

Make Sure it’s Smooth 

Another big tip is to make sure your blog page loads smoothly and quickly on all platforms. Remember people will be logging on from desktop computers, laptops, and mobile devices, so it needs to load and look the same on each of these. If your videos lag, your photos are slow to load, and the text looks off people are instantly going to lose interest in your blog.

Consistency Wins 

In order for your blog to be successful consistency really is the key. Making sure you adhere to these tips at all times will help to bring in the numbers and make your blog a hit.
